Election sermons have been preached in our congregations since Puritan times. Unlike sermons in the Church of England, which were supposed to “please and inspire,” New England Congregationalists inherited a rational tradition and argued that a good sermon was to “inform and convince.” To be honest I’m not sure how much informing or convincing we need at this point, but I will be reminding us of our Unitarian Universalist principles as we head into this very important week.
