UU Urban Ministry
… uniting communities, transforming lives
“Connecting with the Urban Ministry has enriched my life and provided me an opportunity for service as well. Every time I participate in an event or program with them, it’s been a wonderful experience and I’ve felt confident that this ministry is well informed by the people whom it is meant to benefit.” – Marianne Bezaire
Racial justice, youth education and empowerment, support for survivors of domestic violence, local arts and culture, and community engagement—these are the heart of the 200-year-old UU Urban Ministry based at First Church in Roxbury.
The Urban Ministry “works across race and place to dismantle racism and white supremacy culture and to advance racial, social, and economic justice.” UUCR has been a member of the Urban Ministry for many years, engaging by
- providing financial support through Second Offerings and Share the Plate
- sending delegates to the Annual Meeting (delegates also act as liaisons, connecting UUCR members with news, events, and volunteer opportunities at UUUM)
- inviting the Senior Minister to preach at UUCR
- tutoring high-school youth in the after-school program
- conducting practice college interviews
- coaching adults in ESL
- sorting and selling rescued produce with Fair Foods
- taking part in building-and-grounds cleanups
- attending community events such as Jazz on the Green and a youth-led tour of the historic Roxbury neighborhood around First Church
