Summer Chapel: “What We Wish Were True”

Leader: Melissa Martin, Congregational Care & Connection Manager

How do we live faithfully, courageously, and gently when the life we imagined gives way to the life that is actually happening?

On this Sunday, our gathering centers on the voice and wisdom of Tallu Schuyler Quinn — a mother, a minister, a food justice advocate, and the founder of the Nashville Food Project — who wrote her memoir, What We Wish Were True, while living with a terminal brain tumor.

Through book excerpts — one Tallu’s own voice — and by reflecting on an all ages metaphor of tending a garden through both sunshine and rain, we will explore the landscape between reality and hope.

Gathering in an interactive, shared circle, we will make room for radical honesty during our time of Joys & Sorrows.

To mirror the themes of this gathering, you will have the opportunity to share a brief reflection using three guiding prompts:

  • What Is True (Joy): A real, present moment of grace or goodness happening right now.
  • What Is Hard (Concern): A difficult reality you are accepting or enduring.
  • What We Wish (Hope): A gentle hope or wish you hold close for yourself, a loved one, or the world.

All are welcome.
