In Appalachian and folk traditions, Decoration Day was a revered opportunity for gathering at the graves of those who had passed on, for a time of celebration, feasting and singing. Families would travel from long distances to the reunions held in small cemeteries on the sides of mountains to remember their beloved dead. In many ways the tradition holds similarities to the Day of the Dead celebrated in Latinx cultures. Lifted by some of the traditional Appalachian songs from English, Scottish and Irish cultures that made their way to the mountain communities, we’ll reflect on the importance of honoring our beloveds. We’ll say their names, share their pictures, and hold them in loving embrace. Join us!
