Meeting Opal from Greenwood, OK

Lifespan Religious Education
During the early part of our Memorial Day service, we’ll share a Time For All Ages that introduces us to Greenwood – a Black neighborhood in Tulsa Oklahoma. Inspired by the book “Opal’s Greenwood Oasis,” we’ll learn about Greenwood through the eyes of a child who called that place home. We’ll learn about a day in May when she goes downtown. We’ll see the beauty and strength of a vibrant, cultural, business and religious community built by Black people in the early 1900’s. Our story will begin and end with Opal’s very good day.
In the days after Opal’s adventures her neighborhood would be the site of the Tulsa Race Massacre, the worst single racially violent event in American history. Our children are beginning to learn about this event – often alongside their parents – 100 years later. We can reach for books and resources to help us learn this part of our shared history. At UUCR, we have books in our lending library that may be appropriate for your children. We find useful guidance in the videos listed below, you may find these and other online resources helpful.
On this Memorial Day weekend, we hope all of our families are safe and well and find time to enjoy sun, quiet and busy time together.
Be well friends, see you soon,
Sally Liebermann
