Evening Sanctuary: Water Communion Ritual

Wednesday, September 8th : 5:00 – 7:00 pm
Thursday, September 9th: 5:00 – 7:00 pm
Friday, September 10th: 5:00 – 7:00 pm

Water gathers, from stream to river to sea. It cycles between forms, ever-changing, yet still itself. Let us gather together, mindful that gathered water can be dangerous, but that it is also life sustaining and renewing.

Our traditional Water Communion service, this year on Sunday, September 11 at 10 am, invites us to share water from our summer journeys. This year, while we are not yet gathering in person on Sunday mornings, we are opening our sanctuary on several afternoon/evenings before our Water Communion so that friends of all ages may visit church to share water in our communal bowls. That water – which includes water from our shared history – will be used in Sunday’s ritual to bless our individual and collective journeys and our new year together. Come to the sanctuary anytime that we have listed below. Bring your water to share in our communion, or use the water available on site to symbolize your journeys.

How We Safely Participate in Evening Sanctuary/Water Communion Ritual:

All friends are asked to arrive to the sanctuary by coming to the Summer Street entrance – masked and safely distanced – with your water for the communion ritual. There will be a staff member there to greet you and to guide you through the ritual of sharing water, leaving time for you to light a candle and enjoy a few moments of reflection in this sacred space. Friends will then be guided to exit the church through the side door by the church mailbox, or back through the Narthex as necessary for accessibility. At every step, we share our great gratitude for our fabulous Reopening Team, who provide the guidance that has made our Evening Sanctuary possible.

If you are not able to be at church during one of these time frames, you may visit our Summer Street side door entrance anytime Friday, September 10th or Saturday, September 11th to add your water to a communal pitcher that will be safely placed in the sheltered entrance by our mailbox. If you are not able to visit church, but you wish to have water poured in your name, kindly email Sally at [email protected], and we will add water to our collection on your behalf.

As September unfolds we look forward to opening our sanctuary on Wednesdays, when Evening Sanctuary resumes for late afternoon/early evening reflection in our beloved worship space beginning on September 22nd!
