The Flaming Chalice is the symbol of our Unitarian Universalist faith. Why is this so? What does it mean? At today’s service, we will unveil and dedicate a brand new chalice for our sanctuary, designed especially for our church by artist Erin Mahoney Patterson.

Does it seem like the notion of civility is vanishing? From the political to the personal, from the media to the dinner table—are we forgetting that we are called to be kind to each other, and treat even those with whom we disagree with respect? Our Unitarian Universalist faith calls us to buck the trend and be recalled to our best selves again.

Phebe Hannaford was the third woman in America to be ordained into parish ministry. A Universalist, she felt called to the ministry in the 1860’s, while active in the Universalist Church in Reading (our congregation). She went on to be a major voice in the Women’s Suffrage Movement, as well as an outspoken advocate for non-violence during the Civil War. She was a poet and nationally celebrated author who wrote a biography of Abraham Lincoln shortly after he was assassinated. Married and the mother of two children, she also had a multi-decade loving relationship with a woman who was her life partner. Come hear the story of this lesbian daughter of Reading who paved the way for equality for women and the belief in a God of love.

Rev. Tim offers an encore of one of his most challenging sermons from his first year at UUCR. Many of the world’s great religious traditions link our ability to forgive with our capacity to live a life that is filled with joy and peace. And yet, forgiving deep wrongs can seem insurmountable. If you are newer to the church, come to hear a sermon from Rev. Tim’s first year with us. If you are a long-timer, we think the message will ring true even if you heard the sermon six years ago.

A few weeks ago, a peace activist was shot dead in the Occupied West Bank. What is notable about this man is that he had a Jewish mother and a Palestinian father—and he was committed to finding a path to peace between his warring heritages. He embraced his unique role as a ‘go-between person’. Come hear his story, and reflect on where and how we could become the ‘go-between people’ in our families, communities, and our world.

Even as our world finds new ways to connect electronically, many of us are feeling more alone, and more isolated. Current studies suggest that people today have fewer friends and fewer opportunities to share deeply with others. This creates a spiritual emptiness. How can our Unitarian Universalist faith shed light on some interconnected solutions?

Do you care too much, or not enough? How do you know when you are doing enough (or too much) care of self, and how do you know when you are caring enough (or too much) for others and the world? How does Unitarian Universalism provide guidance in finding balance in our lives?
