Music at UUCR
Music is an integral part of the worship life at UUCR with the Adult Choir and Special Musicians at the very heart of the services. We believe that music has the power to enhance and uplift the spiritual experience of worship as well as to build strong and loving community.
A typical worship service at UUCR begins with Gathering Music, followed by an Introit. We will sing three hymns as a congregation from both the “Singing The Living Tradition” hymnal as well as the hymnal supplement “Singing The Journey”, often adding one more song as a Call to Meditation. We share a song for the Children’s Recessional and there are two special anthem spots specially selected to enrich and deepen the service theme’s message.
The Adult Choir is open to all members and friends of the church. Led by Mary Cunningham, Music Director and accompanied by Margaret Scharff, Pianist/Organist, this choir of 30 talented and dedicated singers contributes a wide variety of beautiful music to worship drawn from Classical, Folk, Contemporary, Gospel, and World traditions.
We rehearse on Thursday evenings from 7:30PM to 9:00pm and on Sunday mornings 45 minutes before the Worship service. The choir sings 3 services per month from September through mid-June including special celebrations at Thanksgiving, Easter, and Christmas Eve. Twice a year, the choir will prepare larger works, such as Handel’s “Messiah” or Jason Shelton’s “Sources” for Special Choir Sundays. All are welcome!
Our “Special Musicians”
We are blessed with a wealth of very special musicians in our congregation that give of their time and talent providing excellent music for worship service where the choir is not performing. Coordinated by the Music Director, several worship services each month will have music by Guitarists, Keyboardists, Vocal soloists and Ensembles, Wind and String players and percussionists.
Summer Worship Service Music
Coordinated by UUCR member Roald Wilson, the music for our summer worship services provides a wide variety of expression.
Instruments available for use are the Sanctuary organ, grand piano, Clavinova, Drum set, hand drums
In Fellowship Hall we have a Console piano and electronic keyboard.
