Our Governance is in accordance with our bylaws. The Board consists of the President, Vice President for Programs, Vice President for Finance, Vice President for Planning, and five at large members. The VPs convene councils in their areas and much of the day-to-day operation of the church is managed by the councils and committees of the church. The Agenda Committee is comprised of the President, Vice Presidents, and the Minister.
The board’s work is to set policy and to support the work of the staff and committees of the church. They also serve as the fiduciary group in the congregation. Part of their job is also to be smart, listen to the congregation to understand where they want the church to go, and then provide leadership to get us there.
All Governing Board members attend a daylong retreat in the summer to set the year's goals and then meet once a month. Typically each member is part of a Board Subcommittee to investigate one of the goals and bring a recommendation to the full Board.
Establishing an operating budget for the church for presentation at the annual all congregational meeting is another function of the Board and takes a good bit of our time in the Spring of each year.
The governance structure was adopted on March 28, 2004. The bylaws of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Reading, Ma were certified on April 10, 2005. Download a copy:
The governing board's finance subcommittee creates policies, procedures, reference documents, committees, and task forces to establish sustainable financial resources to maintain the Unitarian Universalist Church of Reading's staff, programs, and property, and support its growth as a welcoming spiritual community. Our goal is to create a stable and secure financial future for the church, and promote greater understanding of church finances by all church members.
