Child Dedications and Namings
Unitarian Universalists believe that children are born with “original blessing.” There is no original sin to be washed away; rather, we join to celebrate and bless their innocent new life. We welcome children into our church community with a beautiful ritual of Dedication and Naming. During this special moment in a Sunday service, the minister offers a blessing using the four elements of life (earth, air, water, and fire), and shares a prayer based on the meaning of the child’s name. The family of the child dedicate themselves to the spiritual nurturance of this precious life, as does the entire congregation. Child Dedications can also be created for older children.
