Demonstrating composting in Sunday service

… a green sanctuary campus

The Green Sanctuary Committee originally led UUCR in becoming an accredited Unitarian Universalist Association “Green Sanctuary”—a church that has engaged in study and prescribed actions toward more sustainable practices grounded in our faith. The committee has since evolved and expanded so that it is now…

… working toward climate justice

Green Sanctuary allows me a path forward toward hope and action on climate change. I send emails and make phone calls to elected officials. I compost with curbside pick-up, and my kids are more aware of food waste and the role they can play to make a change. I’ve made connections with other climate activists that have grown into friendships. I no longer feel powerless. –Allison Sillers

UUCR’s climate justice team, composed of church and community members alike, is committed to raising awareness of environmental issues, with special emphasis on local effects and actions. The team identifies activities that people of all ages can engage in to help create a sustainable future.

To accomplish these goals, among other things, the Green Sanctuary works to:

  • Educate members about choices that minimize the worst effects of climate change
  • Eliminate the use of fossil fuels
  • Provide opportunities to engage in actions and online efforts to make a difference

Focus teams include:

  • Composting at UUCR to make the kitchen fully compostable
  • Promoting food-waste composting in our community (follow Reading Composts on Facebook)
  • Natural Gas Leaks Team
  • Climate legislation activism
  • Greater Reading Alliance for Clean Energy (GRACE), a grassroots organization spun off from Green Sanctuary that encourages a local utility company toward fully renewable-sourced electricity.
